Meet Our Neurosurgeons
The Back and Spine Center is led by three accomplished neurosurgeons. All are board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

John K. B. Afshar, MD
Neurosurgeon
Dr. Afshar earned his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical Center, where he also completed his internship and residencies in neurological surgery. He is extensively trained in complex brain and spinal disorders and has received a spinal fellowship from the University of South Florida, College of Medicine. He also completed research and clinical fellowships in the field of neurosurgery.

Dr. Afshar specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal and brain disorders, including, but not limited to, cervical and lumbar disc herniations, fractures, degenerative disc disease and brain tumors. He provides minimally invasive techniques for his patients, such as cervical disc replacement, microscopic laminectomy, fusions and stereotactic radiosurgery.

John R. Robinson, Jr., MD
Neurosurgeon
Dr. Robinson specializes in the treatment of cervical and lumbar spine conditions as well as brain tumors using computer-guided,minimally invasive microsurgical and radiosurgical techniques.

Dr. Robinson received his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University before attending graduate school at the University of Florida. He graduated with honors in surgery from the University of South Florida, College of Medicine, and completed his internship and residency in neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He underwent fellowship training in trauma and spinal surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and in cerebrovascular/skull-base surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.

John J. Viola, MD, FACS
Neurosurgeon 
Dr. Viola specializes in the treatment of brain and spinal tumors, persistent back pain, fractures, degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, scoliosis, kyphosis and spine deformity, spinal stenosis, ulnar neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome. His focus is on minimally invasive spine procedures, cervical disc replacement and fusions.

Dr. Viola graduated summa cum laude from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. He completed his internship and neurosurgical residency at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Before joining the Back and Spine Center, he was a partner at the Front Range Center for Brain and Spine Surgery, PC, in Colorado.
