PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., Oct. 30, 2012 – Seven months after breaking ground for Tradition Medical Center, Martin Health System celebrated the placing of the final beam atop the new 90-bed hospital in west Port St. Lucie.
The 14-foot beam was covered with signatures from community members, Martin Health associates and volunteers, who had signed it during a six-day tour of locations from Port St. Lucie to Hobe Sound. A tower crane lifted the beam to the top of the six-floor building, where it was placed in a stairwell.
The event, which attracted more than 100 attendees, was co-sponsored by Abingdon at Tradition and TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®.“It is exciting to watch this hospital take shape and to celebrate our progress with our community partners,” said Mark E. Robitaille, president and chief executive officer of Martin Health System. “Building Tradition Medical Center has truly been a collaborative effort and we are grateful for their continued support.”
Construction on the 201,184-square foot hospital is expected to be complete in late 2013, with a January 2014 opening. Tradition Medical Center will feature 90 patient beds with the potential to expand to approximately 300 patient beds.
Tradition Medical Center is located at the southwest corner of Tradition Boulevard and Interstate 95 in west Port St. Lucie. The hospital, which sits on a 20-acre site on the campus of Tradition Center for Innovation, is a significant economic development project for St. Lucie County.
Once fully operational, it will create more than 400 jobs. During the building phase, an estimated 1,000 construction-related jobs will be created. The capital investment will exceed $110 million and Martin Health has been committed to utilizing as many local resources and companies as possible on the project.
The hospital will help the Martin Health System Center for Clinical Research continue to enhance its partnerships with the life sciences organizations at Tradition Center for Innovation.
Since 2009, the health system has collaborated on a number of research studies with VGTI Florida and plays a key role in Tradition Center for Innovation’s development. Tradition Medical Center is being built near Torrey Pines’ facility and across a lake from the facility VGTI Florida opened Feb. 29.
Mann Research Center is developing a medical office building that would be located adjacent to the hospital, providing convenient access for patients and health care providers.
Martin Health began seeking permission to build a hospital in west Port St. Lucie in 1998 and filed numerous applications over an eight-year period. In June 2007, Martin Health received preliminary approval from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration for a certificate of need to build the hospital. The approval was challenged, but in October 2010 the First District Court of Appeals ruled in Martin Health’s favor, ending the challenge.
Following that decision, Martin Health began partnership with KLMK Group, Balfour Beatty, HKS Architects and TLC Engineering to assist in the planning, designing and construction of Tradition Medical Center.
“We are grateful to everyone who has partnered with us on this project, to help ensure residents of west Port St. Lucie have access to high-quality health care,” Robitaille said. “Tradition Medical Center will play a vital role in enhancing quality of life in the community for years to come.”
