Prostate cancer affects thousands of men every year. In 2013, an estimated 238,590 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and approximately 29,720 men will die as a result of the disease. At Martin Health, 18 percent of new cancer diagnoses for men were prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can be highly curable if it is detected early. It is recommended that black males between the ages of 40 and 75 years of age, and white males between the ages of 50 and 75 receive annual screenings for prostate cancer. Men at a higher risk for developing the disease, including those with a close family member diagnosed with prostate cancer, should be tested earlier – at age 30 and older for black males, between the ages 40 of 75 for others.
