Bend your knees when lifting, shoveling or hauling materials.
Use a wheelbarrow to haul soil, mulch, fertilizer and other heavy materials.
Don't smoke around lawn mowers and other gas-powered equipment.
Wear closed-toe shoes with rubber soles.
Avoid wearing perfume, which can attract bees and wasps.
Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin.
Don't apply pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers on windy days.
Plan your day so you can work in the shade as much as possible.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat.
Drink plenty of water before, during and after gardening.
