To Work Safely in the Garden

  • Bend your knees when lifting, shoveling or hauling materials.

  • Use a wheelbarrow to haul soil, mulch, fertilizer and other heavy materials.

  • Don't smoke around lawn mowers and other gas-powered equipment.

  • Wear closed-toe shoes with rubber soles.

  • Avoid wearing perfume, which can attract bees and wasps.

  • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin.

  • Don't apply pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers on windy days.

  • Plan your day so you can work in the shade as much as possible.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat.

  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after gardening.
