The benefits of gardening

Spring 2016

It’s springtime! Don’t let your days of playing in the dirt go by.  No matter what your age, you can still sport dirty fingernails—and reap rewards in the process. Start a garden, or volunteer at a local nonprofit that needs gardening help.

All-around benefits

Gardening is good for both your physical and mental health.

Whether you're digging, hoeing or pulling weeds, you're working your muscles and exercising.

On average, gardeners burn about 300 calories per hour, reports the American Council on Exercise.

Being outside may also lift your spirits and help relieve stress.

Planting a garden is even good for your wallet. When you grow your own produce, you may save money on groceries-and, as a bonus, improve your diet. Just think how much you're going to savor those vine-ripened fruits and vegetables!

Stay safe

Inspired to get growing? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these gardening safety tips:

Dress appropriately. Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, sturdy shoes and gardening gloves. Don’t forget the insect repellent!

Slather on sunscreen. Look for a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses offer additional protection.

Protect your ears and eyes. Safety goggles and ear protection are must-haves when using power tools and equipment.

Follow instructions. Be sure to note instructions and warnings on chemicals and lawn and garden equipment. And keep these products out of children's reach.

Avoid heat illness. In hot weather, drink plenty of nonalcoholic, low-sugar fluids and take breaks often.
